Which distro? Do you have required everything in: http://ahnews.music.salford.ac.uk/scribus/documentation/index-2.html#ss2.2 and http://ahnews.music.salford.ac.uk/scribus/documentation/compile-cvs.html The other potential source of crashing is dodgy fonts.
