I also had a same kind of problem that ripping was not successful. In my, case, they (the printer) touched the pdf with Express, and that turned out to be the problem. Only the use of Acrobat + PitStop ended in a success. There was a discussion on this aspect last September. He's now telling me that - while they can open the PDFs without any difficulties - when the try to place them on their RIP the processor won't read them.
