I have produced PDFs using Scribus for attachment to e-mails, which have to be readable on all platforms. One I produced was far too large, but I noticed that a number of fonts were only used in block headers, and I tried converting those headers to paths. The result was a huge reduction in the size of the PDF file.
So if you are using exotic fonts for illustrative purposes and only a few letters, rather than have the whole font file included in your output, convert it to paths. Dave
