I didn't say there was a better way:-) The best way would of course be an extended keyboard, or perhaps a keyboard with small displays in the keys that change when you change keyboard layout. One of the reasons he wanted a new font was because in present fonts the IPA characters are located in places for regular characters. But I see that only as a convenient way of entering them, and changing to a font where they are in the right unicode locations would make it harder to enter them /Peter
