If you check out Qt's signals and slots mechanism, you'll find it's designed to achieve just that. The current Scribus code turns that somewhat backwards, but there's a lot of cleanup work going on to address that (much of it being done by Craig Bradney). One of the resulting benefits should be that it'll be easier to change and customise the GUI in future. -- Craig Ringer
