Having fonts available has a performance penalty on startup only. This will improve in 1.3.4, though.
Actually using fonts takes away quite some memory from RAM. If you use several fonts like Cyberbit or Arial Uni in your document you may run out of memory (and experience some swapping before that). This will also improve in 1.3.4. With current Scribus 1000-2000 fonts should be ok.
