I was having a similar behavior, i am using WindowsXP SP2+Scribus 1.3.3.9+Adobe Acrobat 5.5, i solved my issues when changed Adobe Acrobat to Foxit Reader. My prob. was : clear (white) stripes horizontally over photos but not over text or drawing.
