You can set a specific linespacing value to any paragraph in a text frame by making use of paragraph stylesheet. You can achieve lots of variations and tiny adjustments too. But you are right, there is no automatic way to set various linespaces into one single paragraph. AFAIK this is not possible in many other DTP apps, including QuarkXPress (at least up til v. 6.5).
