TeX is a typesetting engine. It was written way before WYSIWYG-DTP. TeX input is more or less plain text files, but with special "commands". LaTeX (and a lots of other *TeX) are sets of macros to make using TeX easier. I have never worked directly with Tex, only a little with LaTeX. LyX is a "word processor-like" frontend for LaTeX. Working in LyX is quite similar to working in for example Word, but yet very different. From LyX you the invoke LaTeX go get your output (for example postscript or pdf). Look att http://www.lyx.org
