There is something odd going on here - much odder than I had at first thought. If Symbol WORKS with Thomas's Mac, then presumably the problem lies somewhere on my own Mac. Bearing in mind the failure of several other applications on my own Mac to handle Symbol font (Mail, TextEdit, Page) maybe it is something wrong with the way my machine is configured. If Symbol DOES'NT work on Thomas's ... then the plot thickens and I shall feel that my query was not in vain. Meanwhile, I shall toddle off and try downloading Scribus onto some of the other Macs I have here in case it is, perhaps, operating system version or machine/processor dependant. Once again, many thanks for a remarkably cogent and extremely detailed sequence of e-mails.
