The idea is to have the edge of one picture dissolve into the edge of another. That means the topmost picture has to fade to transparency the the point of overlap. Scribus 1.3.5 has some intriguing but head-scratching features. There is for example a blend mode on the Color properties of an image or a shape but it is stuck on "Normal". The indicators for a gradient e.g. black to white are there but they have no effect on an image. They only work on a shape.
And in the layers dialogue there are two new and at the moment perplexing features. There is a blend mode that has choices but it has the popup notation "Works only with PDF 1.4." And there is an opacity selection with the notation "works only in pdf 1.4 and svg." Apparently these notations only refer to final output limitations. Anyhow there may be some possibilities for blending images by blending layers but adapting this for an edge blend will be challenging. More later. -- John Culleton Create Book Covers with Scribus/e-book $5.95 http://www.booklocker.com/books/4055.html
