This workaround may work better, and is certainly easier:

Open the PDF in Adobe Reader, then print to a file, which will create a 
PS file. Then take that file and use ps2pdf (which is part of 
ghostscript). This is also a workaround for flattening transparency for 
a PDF 1.3 file.
