I don't know about the stable version 1.3.3.14, but I have 1.3.9 and it can import Word docs fine. But even in 1.3.3.14 you can copy and paste. However, when you import (or copy and paste) a Word doc into 1.3.9 it loses all the formatting. A better solution would be to convert it to OpenOffice.org format. Scribus can import OOo documents and retain the styles and formatting. In turn, OOo can import the Word doc and retain the styles and formatting.
