Many thanks to everyone. I force quit and rebooted and now seem to be able to edit through the main screen making sure I double click to get the cursor rather than the hand up.
Probably operator error - I did say I was a newbie!! You've all been very kind and the tips you've all given me will be of use in the future I'm sure. Hope I haven't wasted your time.
