I have tried importing tables as PDFs for personal work, using the 'Experimental' setting in the Export as PDF dialog, and I must admit the end result is not too bad.
But I am a bit reluctant to do that in a magazine containing other people's work. The end result always seems a bit blanched and faded. So I format the text in OpenOffice and then reset the tabs in Scribus. It works okay but it's a bit tedious.
