For example when working with rotated frames it is a real pain to use in-frame editing since the view on the screen cannot be rotated. And even if the view could be rotated, opening a story editor window would be a lot faster. When working with linked text frames and editing a long story it becomes hard to find the place you are looking for by in-frame editing, working in something like the story editor is a lot easier.
