I was having just this sort of trouble with a large 5-year-old iMac. Turned out that it was the hard disc giving up. I had the computer overhauled by a local firm. They fitted a SSD instead and the computer works properly and fast. As an intermediary cure, but not permanent, back up the HD, scrub it totally, reformat it and reload it. That should get you out of the current problem. But SSD is the way to go. The computer repair guy reckoned that modern drives will last for only 3 - 5 years these days. It’s disgusting. My older computers are still soldiering on - slower than modern machines but OK after 10 years or more. B.t.w. Scribus now runs like a mag-lev train and is much more stable.
