Crystal Waters Ecovillage in Queensland, Australia is one of the best
models of a permaculture community. I believe Crystal Waters is 800
acres and 56 landowners own their own housesites (2 acres?) and the rest
is common land and various members lease parts of it for orchards,
grazing, farming, etc. Much of it kept wild of course. Crystal Waters
was conceived, planned and built with permaculture design as the driving
force. There is a village center with various enterprises, community
buildings and common space. Housing areas are clustered, Many of the
most beautiful areas were reserved for common space. Roads and access
ways were laid out carefully with an eye to contours, least digging,
etc. Parts of the land were keylined and a system of ponds installed.
Some of the first things done on the land were to build a bathhouse with
shower and laundry facility and a campground with RV hookups. This
allowed members and potential members to visit while the first parts of
the commonworks were being done and the houses constructed.
