SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE
The Rising Tide - Time Bomb
>From the pages of the CMJ New Music Report, Issue: 666 - May 15, 2000

The Rising Tide is the second album of original material by Seattle's Sunny
Day Real Estate since the band broke up and reformed after the release of
1995's LP2. Showcasing the band's streamlined lineup (guitarist Dan Hoerner,
drummer William Goldsmith and vocalist/bassist Jeremy Enigk), the album is a
bold reaffirmation of SDRE's impassioned might and expressive, taut
melodies. Not surprisingly, the new band configuration (Enigk has moved from
guitar to bass) works well, and the three-piece Sunny Day Real Estate still
startles with complex and powerful songs. As the title suggests, The Rising
Tide has a beauty that hits the listener in waves, from the intricate,
lilting interplay between electric and acoustic guitar on "Tearing In My
Heart" and the sanddollar-fragile hymn of "Faces In Disguise" to the
anthemic percussive swells of "Disappear." Though rolling energetically,
Sunny Day's sea is no threat -- Enigk's voice is an unsinkable life
preserver. His natural, octave-jumping falsetto is like none other in rock
today, and his heartfelt wails will keep you afloat even in the deepest
waters.
