Hi Cheri,
  You are not alone in having trouble keeping up.  Definitely stick
with Rails, since the migration forward there will be less painful
than a switch to Merb and then to Rails 3 would be (in sum, each part
would probably be less painful).  One thing you can do to reduce the
pain is to keep up a little bit all the time.  Maybe take a few hours
once a month and move to the latest stable parts.  Dedicated time
spent upgrading is way easier than having to make a big move all at
once when you need a new feature.
