Guyren,
Sounds great! Let's plan on the April meeting.

Best,
Rob

I would find that talk very interesting. So +1 from me.

It might surprise anyone who knows me and has put up with any of my rants on
the subject to hear that I consider SQL to be one of the greatest carbuncles on
the ass of the software development industry. It's awful, in almost every way.

In this way, I have great sympathy with the NoSQL movement.

But the remedies proposed by the NoSQL folks are egregious throwbacks to the
dark ages of the computer industry. You shouldn't go over to the dark side.

The problem, you see, is not the relational model. The relational model is a
shining beacon of elegance, generality and efficiency. The problem is SQL.

Modern SQL databases (ie not MySQL) attach enough bandaids and splints and
bionic implants to the creaking SQL model that it gets relatively close to the
beauty that the relational model ought to be. It is, in short, the best we have.

Particularly if you know how to use some of the more advanced features.

I propose giving a talk on this topic, if there is reasonable interest in my
doing so. What the relational model is, why it's best, the many ways SQL falls
terribly short, how to mostly work around those ways, how MySQL mostly fails to
provide those workarounds. And why that means you mostly probably don't need
one of those awful NoSQL things.

I couldn't get something together for March, but how about April?
