This might sound random, but are you using rspec_multi_matchers, or some other really old or not so popular gem? Some gems do dumb things like define Kernel methods, which work fine at the time but break things later and never get caught because not too many people use them. I'd take a good look at any testing gems or rack-related gems as they seem like the most likely to dig in some deep hooks.
