Another important aspect of choosing a gem is which dependencies does
impose on you. For instance: lots of interesting engines and plugins rely
on Devise. That is generally a good choice because Devise is such a popular
gem. But if a developer tries to keep dependencies lean and extensible by
means of documented public interfaces, its really helpful and empowering

Alchemy CMS, for instance, gives you an option to use your own auth gem and
they provide their own for Devise.
