I'm an SDRuby alumni now living in Kansas City and will gladly help out with any logistical questions for those of you traveling to KC. Rob Kauffman and Patrick Crowley can attest to the delicious BBQ and other great things there are to see in do in KC. The KC Royals (last year's World Series Champions) play at home on May 2, 3, and 4th if you want to catch a baseball game. The airport is about 30 minute drive from the conference. Public transit from the airport is pretty much nonexistent, but they're taxis, shuttles, and Uber (we don't have Lyft anymore). Let me know if you have any other questions.
