[AI] revue of the textscout mobile reader

2009-08-13 Thread dinesh thole
Hello friends,
Today I tried the text scout mobile reader which has been newly launched as a
competitor to KNFB reader.
I tried this on my nokia n82 phone.
I took pictures of pages of a book, and found that the recognition was good.
The software reads the recognized text quite well.
We can also use mobile speak or talks for reading the text.
A totally blind person has the option of turning off the display for saving
battery power.
This software is compatible with nokia 6220 classic, n79, n82, n85, n95, n95
8gb.
Text scout uses the internet for sending the image for recognition, to the
server.
I found that this process took time.
If we have to use the software, a high speed internet connection will be
required
It has been mentioned that the software transmits 30 to 50 mb data per month.
This can be expensive as well.
Personally, I do not like the idea of using the internet for processing of
image because of the time taken to process it.
I shall further write my experiences with the product as I use it.
Note that these are my personal views.
Others may have other views.
I request others to correct me if I am wrong anyware.
Thanking you all.
Warm regards.
Dinesh thole.

Using a WiFi connection speeds up the recognition process considerably. But
I admit, that requiring some sort of connection to the internet would be a
big limitation indeed. That's one of the reasons I don't like WayFinder
Access as well.

Kiran

further our gprs connections are slow ranging from 144 to 225 kbps I.E
20 to 30 KBPS , they are also very costly and these might be major
limitations.

2009-08-13 Thread prateek aggarwal
dinesh,
thanks for reviewing the software text scout,
i haven't yet tryed the same in my n96, but i'll soon do it.
however, i having several queries based on the review you have posted,
please provide your inputs on them for me to decide further.
you are requested to please give your inputs soon as possible, as my
curiosity is mounting.
here are the question that i found worth asking:

1. which internet technology you are using, I.E. gprs, or 3g?
2. any idea, how much time it has finally taken for whole process from
scanning to reading?
3. can you tell how many mb of data it has burnt in sending and
receiving the results?
4. which synthesiser it uses to read the text, is it understandable enough?
5. is it possible to read the same with different commands, like
previous phrase, next phrase, next line, etc?
6. finally, does it provide the process to save the page for later
reading? if yes, in what format it saves it, whether .txt, .doc, or
any specific format of it's own?
i'll waite for your inputs soon as possible.
