Re: AIX client dsmsched.log stopped recording

2002-06-18 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

The logs are probably being written in a different location. If you
don't specify the location of the schedule log and error log in the
dsm.sys file it gets created in the tivoli directory where the dsm.sys
file is. You need to have the following in the dsm.sys file:

dsmschedlogname /xxx/xxx/dsmsched.log
dsmerrorlogname /xxx/xxx/dsmerror.log

Why the client's log files stopped recording and how
can I start it up again?

Getting events formatted better????

2002-05-30 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

I have been using a q event * * node=* begindate=today-1 enddate=today
begintime=08:00 endtime=06:30 format=detailed
command for quite a while. I output the info into a web page for
Operations staff to read. I am tired of
having to move the page to the right to see the status. I've got it so
that COMPLETED is green and MISSED is
red and other conditions are blue.

I can use the select node_name from events . for a
different output but I don't like the missing info
from the q events command.

I am looking for a script that rearranges the columns from the q
events command
to put the node name first and the status second and whatever order I
want the rest.

I've tried using awk and while it works I can't get the columns lined up
nice and neat.

Any help out there for this??

Expiration processing question.

2001-08-09 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

Assume 1 object = 1 file

Lets assume I have a node with one partition. The partition called
/stuff
has 1,000,000 files.

I start expiration and it is working on the file system /stuff
from the beginning. I cancel the process after it gets to file# 500,000

When I start expiration again I know it starts at the last node
and file system BUT DOES IT continue at file # 500,001 or at the
file # 1

I want to delete a second copy pool set of tapes. How do I do it??

2001-07-08 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

A year ago we switched from 3490 tapes to 3590E tapes. I have alot of
tapes in a copypool made up of older 3490 tapes. All the local tapes
are 3590E tapes. I moved all the data from local 3490 tapes onto
3590E tapes.

I have been copying the 3590E tapes to a new copypool of 3590E tapes
and when the copies are finally complete I know I can safely delete
the 3490 tapes and the data. I expect to complete all the work in about
2 weeks. Yes, I can wait but

Is there a command out there will tell me that I can delete a 3490
tape by knowing that all the data on the older 3490 tape exists on a
3590E
offsite tape??

Expiration question??

2001-06-15 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

I have one primary tape pool and (I won't get into it) and two copy tape
pools.

Example:

I have three copies of a file. The file in the primary pool WILL be
expired.
when expiration processing gets to it.

Does expiration remove AT THE SAME TIME the copies or does expiration
have go through each pool? Assuming the primary pool has one million
files
for all the nodes and only my one file meets expiration does TSM have to
search
three million records to delete all three instances of my file??

Re: What volume is my backup on, at time of restore?

2001-06-15 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

When I first read this I thought it would simply be easier for TSM to
take
care of the restore. However, IF, you have a screaming fast server where
TSM
runs the massive searches, the script could be pretty handy used in the
right places.

If anyone has one out there I would like to see it also.

There is an option you add at the end of the migration command called

TDP For Oracle Sun--No stats in the server log.

THe TDP oracle client has a nice log about what it sent to the server.

On the server the only messages I get are about the TDP client
connecting, nothing
else I am used to seeing with backup clients like the backup stats.

From the server side how can tell, except for an audit, how much data
got transfered??

OS/390 2.4 to 2.6 and TSM 3.7 performance.

2000-12-04 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

We will be upgrading our os/3909 2.4 system to 2.6 to take
advantage of the newer tcp/ip stack that will hopefully improve
TSM backup/restore transfer rates.

The best I've seen here using a unix 3.7 client to the tsm 3.7 server
running on os/390 was about 1.5 KB/sec (aggregate). We have a 100 MB
connection to our network.

Could someone tell me what kind of performance increase I can expect
to see going to os/390 2.6 with the improved tcp/ip stack??

Re: SCRIPTS FOR failed/missed backups

In this case there is know way except to run the script many times
in given time frame. I set my script up in a way for the operator
on duty to track the missed or started nodes using q sess commands.

MISSED means a failure

STARTED means look at the server log to see when it ended.

Really bad performance for a sql query after upgrading to v 3.7

2000-11-02 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

We are currently running TSM Version 3, Release 7, Level 3.6 on OS/390.
We upgraded from version 3.1. On the 3.1 version I used to run a select
command to show me how many tapes each node was using. Here is the
select
command:

select node_name, count (distinct volume_name) as Numvols from
volumeusage -
where stgpool_name='TAPEMCO' group by node_name order by Numvols desc
tapem.txt

This select used to take about 45 minutes to run on the 3.1 version but
now this
select command simply grinds the server to a halt. I eventually have to
cancel adsm
to recover the server. Is there something about the 3.7 version or my
select command
that would cause this kind of problem. If the command takes 2 hours to
run then that
is fine but I can't have the server slowed down so much that I cannot do
other things.

full marked as offsite.
   Command: update vol m* access=offsite
whereaccess=readwrite wherestg=adsm-offsite location="RECALL"

   Start Date/Time: 08/25/00 10:25:00
  Duration: 6 Hour(s)
Period: 1 Day(s)
   Day of Week: Any
Expiration:

To move tapes back onsite I use this command once a week (Sunday):

 Schedule Name: MOVE-ONSITE
Description: Move tapes backup to onsite status. Only
tapes that are empty
   Command: update vol m* access=readwrite
whereaccess=offsite wherestg=adsm-offsite location="" wherestatus=empty
