HP SureStore Optical 320ex library
Hi all, Does anybody have experience to define and operate the HP SureStore Optical 320ex library? We cannot make the /dev/rmt/?mt** work by add_drv command but adding lb by changing lb.conf works. client and server IP address in different schedule mode
Hi all, I would like to know whether there is difference between schedule polling and prompt mode in terms of server and client IP address. The scenario is: We changed the schedule mode to be prompt but the server cannot contact the client; but the client can contact the server. We found the server try to contact client with a IP address which is not that client's. But it worked before, I guess it was set to polling mode. Will it overwrite the IP which is known on server when the client contact server at the first time? Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Phillip Guan

Re: Oracle/NT TDP question - DOC is wrong!
Here is the text of the APAR to fix the problem. Phillip APAR= IC27152 DOC MAJOR ERRORS IN MANUAL SH26-4113-00 TDP FOR ORACLE FOR WINDOWS UNIX SYNTAX USED IN MULTIPLE PLACES. PROBLEM SUMMARY: * USERS AFFECTED: TDP for Oracle for Windows* * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:Numerous errors found in this* * publication, as described in the PROBLEM CONCLUSION: section.* * RECOMMENDATION: Correct all errors indicated in APAR, as soon* * as possible.* PROBLEM CONCLUSION: Listed below are the problems and their corrections (in quotes): 1. First of all our readme file says this. >No environment variables are required for use with TDP for Oracle and their use is NOT RECOMMENDED. If you want to use the dsm.opt file from a locationother than the default location, use environment variable DSMI_ORC_CONFIG. "The readme is correct. The following has been added the book: "Environment variables are not required for use with TDP for Oracle. However, if environment variables are used, consider the following information." 2. There needs to be some correspondence between the readme and the book regarding the environment variables. "See revision/correction in #1." 3. On page 7 it describes the installation procedure. Step 3 says "Click Finish to complete the setup" If you go through the install after completed step2, you are not presented with a Finish button, you must select Next a few times including a section of selecting an installation directory. "Step 3 is revised as follows: Follow the prompts until the installation is completed." 4. Page 8 is titled Defining Environment Variables. Itshould talk about the differences between Oracle 7 andOracle 8. There is an example for one of the environment variables, but it should show the syntax in each example. Also, regarding the set option, it should specify that thismust be placed in a command script. "After consulting with Development, it was concluded that there are nosignificant differences between Oracle7 and and Oracle8 worthy of describingin this section. However, the following example syntax for DSMI_LOG was revised toinclude Oracle7 and Oracle8 examples as follows: For example, if the error log directory is c:\agentorc, enter: For Oracle7: set DSMI_LOG=c:\agentorc For Oracle8: RMAN> allocate channel c1 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(DSMI_LOG=c:\agentorc)' 5. On Page 18, everything is wrong. To setup RMAN with TDP for Oracle on Oracle8: 1. Link RMAN with TDP for Oracle. Before relinking, make sure that no other Oracle process is running. Shut down all the databases and listeners, and so forth. The following is a example of linking the Oracle8 objects with the TivoliDataProtection library: *c:> cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib *c:> make -f ins_rdbms.mk LLIBMM=/usr/lib/libobk.aioracle Verify that the relinking process completes. To use RMAN with TDP for Oracle on Oracle8 Version 8.1.5: 1. Shut down all Oracle instances that useORACLE_HOME 2. Remove the libobk.so symbolic link: *rm $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libobk.so *Note: This example uses .so for the shared library suffix. *If the shared library suffix on your platform is not .so, *modify the filenames in these examples to match your *shared library suffix. 3. Symbolically link the library file to libobk.so: *ln -s /usr/lib/libobk.so &ORACLE_HOME/lib/libobk.so 4. Start the Oracle instances. The items preceeded by an asterisk (*) are ONLY done on a UNIX system. "This section ("Setting Up RMAN") has been removedbecause it does not pertain to Windows NT. This linking is done internally (due to Oracle requirements)and is not performed by the user. The "Using RMAN" section has been renamed "Invoking RMAN." 6. Re: schedule daemon and password
Thanks Joshua, Serge and Nick; The "Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle for UNIX Installation and User's Guide Version 2 Release 1" (SH26-4112-00) says the 'passwordaccess' MUST set to 'PROMPT' on page 20! I also tried to put the 'nohup' command in a file and run it and find out it is still shown the command when I issue 'ps -ef' command; I tried Nick's, the result is same as Joshua's: -- ps output 33450 pts/1 0:00 dsmc sched -password -optfile=dsm.opt - This is on an AIX system and out client says it shows the real password on their Solaris system!!!???. Does anyone have any ideas here?: ANS1228E Sending of object 'object-nameobject-nameobject-name' failed Explanation: The specified file (object-name) cannot be sent to the server. System Action: File skipped. User Response: Retry the operation. If the problem continues, see your system administrator to isolate the problem through use of the server console. Thanks. Phillip
HSM on NT/Netware?
I have a client who'd like to run HSM on NT and especially Netware. Looking at Tivoli's site it looks like it's only supported on AIX/Solaris as those are the only platforms it mentions. Is this true? I'm just looking for a confirmation.. Anyone know of any other products that provide similar functionality particularly on netware? Thanks, Gerald Wichmann Sansia System Solutions
NDS Backups
I'm not familiar with NDS at all but the question has been brought up on how TSM handles NDS particularly on other platforms? Can we back up NDS on NT? Sun? ETC? Thanks! Gerald Wichmann
TSM clients ever fail?
Does the TSM client ever give up when its performing a scheduled backup and it loses contact with the TSM server? It doesn't seem so.. Server - TSM 3.7.3 on AIX 4.3.3 client - NT4 with TSM 3.7.2 Created a schedule with a 30 minute window. The client started it's backup in that 30 minute window as expected. On purpose (to see how TSM would handle it) we unplugged the RJ45 from the TSM server about 5 minutes into the backup. What we wanted to see is since the client runs a pre schedule command that shuts down the database, if during the backup the client lost network connectivity with the TSM server, would it time out and start the database back up on it's own? It seems not.. After unplugging the TSM server from the network, the client begins generating TCP errors in dsmerror.log. The sessions time out on the server side and the server closes them (after 15 minutes). The TSM server also eventually flags the schedule as failed. But this is where it gets weird. After about 45 minutes the client was still sitting there generating TCP errors and wouldn't give up. I figured once it got past 15 minutes and outside it's backup window it would give up. It didn't.. Even more strange we eventaully about an hour after running this, decided to plug the TSM server back into the network. Despite the fact that the server had marked the backup as failed, the client immediately resumed sending data to the server as if nothing ever went wrong. And the TSM server let it! This is a problem.. if the TSM server ever loses connection to the network i could have any number of servers with shut down applications until someone picks up on all this. What borught all this up in the first place is we lost DNS a few weeks ago, creating a situation such as the above. The place was a mess until we went around cancelling backups and restarting applications. Why doesnt the client give up if it can't talk to the server? You'd think it would eventually.. will it ever give up? Gerald Wichmann Sansia System Solutions
NT registry security
Question: on backing up Windows NT4, we've noticed TSM creates the adsm.sys directory where it dumps the registry and user info/passwords so it can back it up. This is all fine however is it just me or does this create a huge security hole? By default on NT4, that directory is created with permissions that give "everyone" "change" permissions. Thus *IF* i'm able to view the local filesystem, i can then easily go into that directory and run very commonly available password cracking programs to retrieve all the local users and passwords. Now, remotely i don't believe the average user can see that directory. However if that same user has privs to login locally at the console they can definetly view it. Also if the box happens to run IIS, there are tons of exploits commonly available that allow a user to also view the local filesystem. This is because the "internet guest account" thats created by IIS has privs to log in locally. Ok so theres a threat of someone internally trying this at a console. There's also a threat that someone externally could use IIS exploits to do the same thing. Once i have the local admin password (not the domain admin passwrd), chances are good the local admin password is the same on other NT boxes as well. I mean how many shops have a different local admin password on ALL their boxes? Not many i suspect. Perhaps even their domain admin password is the same as their local admin password. Even if i can't use that password on other boxes, I can definetly install some sniffers and other hacking tools to do even more damage. Install viruses.. destroy that box. Obtain domain passwords.. whatever.. now if i could think of this, and i'm not a security expert, i would imagine others have as well. I was able to locally log in with a non admin user account and use a commonly available tool to get the local admin password. >From there i can think of lots that i can do with that. All because the adsm.sys directory has change permissions for everyone. so has anyone else brought this issue up? Is it common knowledge? Why doesn't Tivoli do something about it? Or perhaps i'm missing something? And if i'm able to think of this, what other ways could someone compromise the system using this info that i WASNT able to think of? I would love to hear other's comments on this.. Does it concern anyone? Gerald Wichmann Sansia System Solutions
hard cut-off time
Hi all, We have an environment where we'd like to implement a hard cut-off time for backups to our TSM server. There are some boxes that start and stop a database or do other pre and post commands that can't afford to still be doing backups when a certain point in the morning comes up. In fact we don't really want any backups going outside of a certain window. If they're still going, we'd prefer they just fail and cancel their sessions and run their post commands. Is there an easy way to implement this in TSM? To cut off any backup sessions and put the server in a disable sessions mode or something along those lines? or do i have to script that via KSH/Perl and do queries and parse out the info and so forth to get the same effect? Thanks, Phillip Guan
