Re: Reuse Copypool tapes in a 2nd offsite DR library

It is a good question but was answered less than 10 days before you asked
it again. Look at list archives and follow the thread Moving Copypool to
a new tape library started June 25-th. Deon George already provided a
very good answer.

Subject:Reuse Copypool tapes in a 2nd offsite DR library

Hi,

Is there a way to use my existing copypool tapes in a 2nd library, so I
won't have to start all over again with a 'full' backup stg, which will
take weeks to complete?

As I see it I need to make a second decive class for my new library, and
then I can't reuse my tapes because they belong to another device class
(device class name, the device type is the same).

I use 1 TSM Server 5.1.6.2 with 3584 LTO1 drives and i'm getting another
3584 with LTO1 drives (FC).

Regards,
Simon

Simon,

Why not create a new primary pool, and back it up to the new copypool? You
can migrate the data from the old primary pool to the new one as time goes
on, and it will get backed up to the new pool, or you can wait until most
of it expires and handle it then.

The down side is that until you move all of the data from the old primary
pool to the new one (and hence have a copy of it in the new copypool),
you'll need to have both copypools for any disaster recovery exercises.

Reuse the tapes.

2002-01-09 Thread Nazir

I have been working with TSM to make backups of my servers.
The TSM server is on Windows NT and It is working with tapes too.
The TSM makes backups and keep it in hard disk, after sends the data to
tapes.
But I want to reuse the tapes again.
What can I do?

generally, normal data expiration allows for the tapes to ~roll~ scratch
again.
files will expire based on associated management class copy group settings.
(and having expire inventory run, expireinterval of 0 says don't
automatically run expiration and you need an admin schedule to run expire
inventory or you just need to manually run it.)

OK, if all that is hap'n a full tape with a low % utilized might need to
have reclamation run against it.
it is best if you have at least two tape drives for reclamation but
it is possible with just one.
(see the user's guide for misc info on running reclamation)

hope this helps
later,
Dwight
