This is bug is still present in 3.3 RC

If I disable Cinch, the problem disappears.

This is an Accessibility issue. I'm the developer of Cinch by Irradiated
Software which uses the Accessibility
API's CopyElementAtPosition function to get the UI element under the mouse
cursor. This is what's causing
the crash (as seen below in your crash report). I have another crash report
(attached) that can be
reproduced using these steps:

OpenOffice 3.2.0
0) Open Accessibility Inspector.app (comes with Xcode developer tools install)
1) Open OpenOffice
2) Open a text document and enter some text
3) Highlight your newly entered text, right click and choose Paragraph
4) Change the background color of your text and choose OK
5) Again highlight your newly entered text, right click and choose Paragraph
6) Un-fill the background color of your text and choose OK, it will crash/hang
now

I also have a radar open with Apple on this issue.

I have OO build 9483.

How can I tell if I have the VLC plug-in installed? I tried inserting a couple
of movies from my Mac. Only a few file types were available to select, and the
actual insert resulted in a giant questions mark ("?") instead of an actual
movie.

This still causes a crash, repeatedly. It definitely should -not- be closed. I
turned off the Mac Spell Checker as suggested, and it still crashes. (Even had
simply turning off this setting solved the problem, that's not exactly a "fix"
-- it's simply masking the problem.)

I'll be happy to provide any logs needed.

Can't reproduce. but as I see in the crash report, it could be the Mac OS X
Spellchecker.

If you ar able to going in the performance dialoge yo go to language settings >
Writing Aids. There you uncheck please the Mac OS X Spell Checker, and try the
same again.

Please post, if this works fine.

I can confirm @argasek's most recent comment: navigating the "Insert Special
Character" dialog strictly with the keyboard will not result in a hang / crash.
It appears that any mouse click inside this dialog (either single click or
double) will result in the aforementioned bug, but keystrokes do not.

I have just made another discovery: the crash/hang doesn't occur, if character
insertion is done using keyboard navigation only. Ie. crash/hang only happens,
when I click on a character (no matter if I use touchpad or mouse).

The same crash/hang happens also when I open Preferences window (Cmd + ,) and
click on 'Language settings' label. When I navigate this label using keyboard,
everything is OK.

@of: I'm sorry a lot. I didn't realize at it was _that_ long. Please delete
this post if possible; I can easily reproduce the crash, so providing the log as

@ argasek: Please don''t paste Crash report content to an issue. It makes an
issue pretty unreadable. Create a text file and attach it to an issue would be
fine.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.2 in 32-bit mode. In OO Text and Calc (and presumably
all of the rest) selecting Insert > Special Character... and then clicking any
character and then selecting OK will cause my machine to crash every single
time. Completely repeatable. This was true in OO 3.1.1 and is still true in OO
3.2.0.

I can work around this problem by using the Mac's built-in Character Viewer to
paste the needed character into place, but attempting to use the OO Insert
Special Character function will crash the application every time.

I've submitted all the crash reports to Apple via the Mac's built-in crash
reporter.
