I knew I had already seen this wish. But, yes, I also support the notion of styling in-text formulae with the surrounding text. If you want to support issue 26446, vote for it. Your initial observation is already wrong. It does not follow the font size of the previous (or surrounding) text! You can see this easily if you change the font size of the text document to 24pt and then insert a formula, or if you select all text (CTRL-A) and then change the font size. The font size in the formula does not change accordingly. It just happens that the default font sizes in a text document and a formula happen both to be 12pt. Thus im flagging this as invalid. However since this would be a nice and reasonable behaviour to have you may change the issue type to "Enhancement" and pass it on to "requirements" (which is the account to gather all suggested improvements) if you feel it should be improved that way. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
