In that case, anecdotally, Amarok takes about eight seconds to start
on my machine. It's an i7. Is this "fast enough" to remove startup
feedback?

The issue was with gray rectangle, right? I think I may have noticed
that, but have written it off as a result of Amarok loading too fast
for the splash screen to load completely (it's normally just a flash).
I can't think of any other application loading as fast as Amarok does
and having a splash screen; much like you say, it seems to make sense
only for slow loading applications, so that a user is given any notion
of progress.

So I for one won't miss the splash screen at all, I barely ever see it.

Splash Screen

2013-06-13 Thread Mark Kretschmann
Heya,

it appears that the splash screen is no longer working. Noone seems to
have noticed except for Myriam, who noticed it by coincidence. As I
was about to start debugging this, I was asking myself if we shouldn't
remove it entirely. Splash screens are a bit 90s, and application
startup time has become so fast (except for Gimp or OpenOffice maybe)
that they no longer make sense.

Thoughts?

Nikhil, could you please put the original PNG image in Git Master too?

It's good to have access to the original. Also, I would like to resize
it a bit, the image is very huge.

so that we still have the original file available.

Sure, just be careful not to introduce string changes. You could
perhaps re-use existing strings.

Splash Screen for Amarok 2.4

2011-01-04 Thread Nikhil Marathe
Hi,

Amarok 2.4 is due to be released soon. A new release deserves a new
splash screen.
You had submitted a collection of splash screens in this post
http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/1164-Kraut-Sourcing.html

and the team really likes the one on the top left in
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/7898/prv3.png

So would it be OK for you to have this as Amarok 2.4's splash? If so, please
send a nice PNG of that individual image and we will put it in Git so
that it is available for the release.

Thanks for the great images,

Reminder:

Release is getting closer, and we should really place a new splash in
Git Master now. Looking over the replies to this thread, there seems
to be a consensus that this image is well suited:

The one on the top-left here: http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/7898/prv3.png

If no-one objects, can we please contact the author (I think it's the
same guy who made the splash for 2.3.0 or so), get the original PNG,
and put it in Git Master? Volunteers welcome, myself I am still on
travels.

This time of the year again: Splash Screen

2010-12-23 Thread Mark Kretschmann
Hey Amarok Team,

first of all, a happy Christmas to all of you (in case your are
Christian, otherwise, just a happy holiday)!

Our release of Amarok 2.4 is nearing, and I guess we should choose a
new splash screen. We still have leftovers from the last contest we
did, the links are in the comments of this article:

http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/1164-Kraut-Sourcing.html

I would suggest, let's all just pick our favorites, and then we can
see what people like best? No need for starting some huge official
voting, unless we can't really get a consensus on one image.

Which one do you like best?
