Hi Gents: I picked up a couple of wide spaced variable capacitors...a heavy duty rotor inductor...its wired for Pi right now...can alter that as I wish to L...T..or other. Hamfest costs maybe about $25 each for the variables...$30 for the variable inductor...pine board was laying around Has matched just about everything I've thrown at it so far...simply pad in a few xmtr micas if need be...only for 80 meters... Glad to see the replies - thank you. My intent in submitting the letter is mainly political. That is, I asked for special consideration for Amplitude Modulation as it seems to me that AM may get less 'respect' in the future than present. I believe that FCC rules will allow AM to have the same bandwidth as used at present. Nevertheless, I wanted to put some heat and noise from a Pro-AM direction to let the FCC folks know there are some opinionated AM'ers working the bands who do not want any future restrictionsthey were talking about it this go around. And...while I was at it...thought I'd ask for more respect...namely AM-use only segments so as to diminsh the AM/SSB elbowing...and add some of that Pro-AM heat. Thanks Guys: This mike is for a vintage 1948 AM rack rig homebrew by W2PLY who moved into Senior Residence. The speech amplifier/modulator schematic is right from August 1947 QST. I got the rack and the 5 sections directly from the flat bed trailer at the estate sale...and now just about finished doing what very little fixin required. The article cites a crystal mike; it feeds directly into the grid of a 6SJ7 with no grid leak resistor. As I understand these things, the mike - what type of cartridge - needs to put out 'so many' microvolts necessary for the tube into which it feeds. And the impedance needs to 'match'. I understand there plenty of gain after the 6SJ7...and one of the 6SN7's has a tone control potentiometer in the grid. Personally, my voice is a little higher from center in pitch..and I'd prefer more lower than higher freq. response...which is generally a problem due to low freq. rolloff in the mike curves...that's why I'm eager to try this 'tone control'. I guess the first question is: what impedance number is required for a 6SJ7 grid? Your generous help is always appreciated. Regards, Steve WA2TAK

I appreciate all your time and help, guys. Excuse me for not mentioning the cathode resistor for bias. From what little I have found...both the Collins 310A exciter and WRL Globe King 275 use a 6SJ7 for mike input...in which case, a hi-Z dynamic should work. So...back to square #1 - what is hi? Mouser has cheap ( $4 ) crystal elements whose impedance range is from 9K to 25K which doesn't look hi to me. I've also read that a ceramic element - acting in the same fashion as the piezoelectric - can be used. Which means that my Electro-Voice 729 is a candidate which is already on my shelf...sparkling since I polished all that cast metal to high sheen. The modulators are 2 x 807's going into an RF deck of 2 X 1625's having link coupled input from a 6L6 oscillator or 6L6 doubler stages...fortunately, I can get the 3.5715 Mc FT 243 type rock from PR Crystal for my 20 meter AM freq 14.286...only $15. Working on this restoration is a great learning experience for me...and again, I sincerely appreciate you sharing with this rookie. Is it illegal to modulation the oscillator in a transmitter?..even if its a one-tube rig? Hi Steve, Your first question appears simple, but in practice is difficult to answer, because it depends on precisely how AM and FM are defined. The FCC doesn't care exactly what definitions you use, as long as the signal meets good engineering practice. 97.101a. Typically, if the bandwidth is less than 6kHz, you shouldn't run into problems. The bandwidth is typically measured with a spectrum analyzer by the FCC. Seems to me that: 1. current carrying capability of the wire is first; 2. turns ratio ( creating impedance ) comes next; Just how difficult would it be to make one? Our predecessors did. Considering the RF amp with 2 x 813's and the modulator with 2 x 813's - what are the equations and math to work out the required wattage, impedance, step ratio etc. And, just how much can one depart from the ideal arrangement and with what effects? Thanks for the replies. The 812/811 combo was sorta what I had in mind. Getting the components shouldn't be too hard if I keep searching. Let me start here...anyone have any suitable parts? About the E class...read a few things about it...sounds most interesting...but MOSFETS don't have the fragrance of warm vacuum tubes on a chilly winters evening nor the soft orange glow cast through the rig perforations onto the shack walls to keep one company...nor the humming vibrations of pumped RF being piped to the outside antenna. 73 Steve WA2TAK

Hi Guys: You're all really great - I sure need this help. My last home brew was an 807 CW xmtr back in 1963 when I got my novice license...just got it back 18 months ago after being QRX for 40 years. There's many ways to go - component wise - so let me express my 'view' of the rig. I like simple - very simple - most simple, like minimalist...as opposed to having features, bells whistles. Style-wise, I'd like to use nice, shinny vintage parts...with contemporary materials...rather than try to get the neovintage look. The pictures I've seen on some Eclass rigs appeals to me...clean and neat looking. Don't know if I'd like the Amp Mod separate units or stacked. Stacked in a single enclosure sounds easy mechanically...and little less work? Not having fans/blowers seems to be a good operating advantage with less interfering noise. Seems like the replies are 'amp-minded' rather than complete high power AM transmitter..which gets to the matter of the exciter. I'm presently completing my DX100 ala GTO ( Fire Enginer red w/ chrome ) restoration...might I be able to put the MODAMP into a DX100 enclosure?? Make a nice looking set...but might be a bit too tight? Tnx, Steve WA2TAK
