The "clock" and "weather" apps (widgets?) on your Hero are proprietary and, AFAIK, have no documented Intents for anything, let alone getting latitude and longitude of a city from a list. I don't know about getting a list of cities, but android.location.Geocoder#getFromLocationName will give you an address with latitude and longitude for strings like "Boston, MA".
