I specified the order of my soundcards in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
like this:

options snd-hda-intel index=1
options snd-hdsp index=0

Of course you have to adjust this to use the correct identifiers for
your soundcards.

I don't have Pulseaudio installed, yet, so I haven't tried it myself,
but AFAIK you could try to start VLC with pasuspender wich will suspend
PA as long as a given programm is running.

A quick search in google reveals that he spammed it across lists of
numerous distributions and others. Must be a religious fanatic or just a
troll. *shrugs*
