[arr] Rahman on Ravana's music
Old one..came sometime back in Dec 2008... Rahman said, Some of the songs in Lajjo were generic, so we have translocated them into Ravana. Such things happen once in a while. No regrets. There is no time for that. Regret is boring. Mani's new film is a new genre for me. I've done nothing like this before. So that's exciting. http://entertainment.oneindia.in/bollywood/gupshup/2008/abhishek-aishwarya-ravana-041208.html
[arr] 10 soundtracks that changed the world
http://www.nowtoronto.com/stage/story.cfm?content=170555 10 soundtracks that changed the worldFilm soundtracks have had a huge influence on mainstream listening tastes. Here are 10 albums that forever altered the musical landscape. The Harder They Come (1972)With this album, Desmond Dekker, Toots the Maytals and, of course, Jimmy Cliff endeared themselves and the genre of ska and roots reggae to a new audience worldwide – particularly in the UK, where Dekker would later become a Mod sensation and Toots Hibbert would be covered by the Clash and other punks. Nothing’s better than the originals, though, which sound as good today as they did on their release date.A Hard Day’s Night (1964)It’s impossible to separate the influence of the Beatles’ first film from that of the soundtrack itself. Richard Lester’s mockumentary spotlighting the perils of the Fab Four’s mega-fame was a precursor of the music video and paved the way for the Monkees’ TV series. But the LP, the Beatles’ first with all-original material, had its own impact, especially George Harrison’s work on his Rickenbacker 12-string, which moved many bands, including the Byrds, to go for a harder, more rock ’n’ roll sound.Shaft (1971)To introduce the black private dick who’s a sex machine to all the chicks, Isaac Hayes lays down a sonic wall of funk perfectly matched to Richard Roundtree’s bad-mother swagger. But the Oscar-winning Theme From Shaft was just the first track in a sinewy soul score that still makes Gordon Parks’s 1971 actioner stand out from the blaxploitation pack.Saturday Night Fever (1977)The iconic dance film that made John Travolta a star launched the disco craze across the world. Unfortunately, the plot was based on a completely fabricated article by a writer who later confessed to having no knowledge or understanding of the culture, and the extremely successful soundtrack has since been criticized for contributing to the whitewashing of the black and gay roots of disco in favour of the Bee Gees’ mainstream pop version.Wild Style (1982)Hip-hop was pretty much unknown outside of a few American inner cities when Wild Style was released, making its soundtrack the first time most of the world heard the genre. A number of similar films soon followed, but this was the first to expose the culture, and featured early innovators like Grandmaster Caz, Fab 5 Freddy, Grand Wizard Theodore and the Cold Crush Brothers.Purple Rain (1984)In the film, Prince takes his muse, Apollonia, on a motorcycle ride out to a quiet spot by the lake where skinny dipping was an inevitability. Within minutes, Apollonia’s jaw-dropping physique is on full display. But this, one of the film’s more satisfying scenes, has nothing on Prince’s flawless soundtrack. Purple Rain was for him what Thriller was for MJ – a career-defining hit.Singles (1992)The grunge soundtrack for this rom-com eclipsed the actual film, becoming a bestseller months before it even hit theatres. Nirvana, one of the only Seattle bands not included on the soundtrack, had already blown up the year before, but this compilation, including Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, brought the music into the mainstream, leading to a shortage of cheap flannel shirts and an abundance of generic alt-rock radio stations.Pulp Fiction (1994)You could argue that Quentin Tarantino had already made his soundtrack mark with Reservoir Dogs, but this was the one that really made it into the popular consciousness. The mixture of surf, early rock’ n’ roll and soul brought guitar hero Dick Dale back from obscurity and introduced a new generation to classic RB sounds, reminding the world that Al Green’s version of Let’s Stay Together is the only one that really matters. (Sorry, Tina Turner.)O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)By the time this soundtrack hit shelves, the Coen brothers were known for memorable soundtracks. (Kenny Rogers’s Just Dropped In is rarely played without a Big Lebowski reference.) But this T-Bone Burnett-curated mix of vintage bluegrass, both originals and well-done covers, grabbed more attention than the movie.Slumdog Millionaire (2008)Thora Birch may have danced to Jaan Pehechan Ho over the Ghost World credits, but Slumdog Millionaire put Bollywood on the Billboard charts. The Slumdog mix juggles propulsive pop (M.I.A.’s Paper Planes), A.R. Rahman’s Bollywood-flavoured underscore and the theme from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? to guide viewers through the movie’s time-scrambled structure – all the while building to Oscar-winning number Jai Ho. That beats a flatful of Scottish junkies from that other Danny Boyle pic, Trainspotting.
[arr] Re: crescendos
Currently, the following comes to my mind... Meherbaan (ADA) Hai Rama (RANGEELA) Nahin Samne (TAAL) Hum hain is pal yahaan (KISNA) specially the last 2 mins. Kabhi Neem Neem (YUVA) Kismat se tum (PUKAR) Title track (BOMBAY DREAMS) specially from 1:57 to 2:19. and the list goes on.. I think this is one of his favorites too as he seems to try to incorporate this wherever possoble. Awright, for official purposes, I need to change my stance from My most favorite part to One of my most favorite parts since there are, first of all, too many parts to love and then there is too many favorite parts... - the bass (he probably was the first one to introduce bass in almost all of his songs), new singers, versatality, OCD to some extent in some (to actually most) of his songs, fusion (that I've craved from my childhood) - esp carnatic and hindustani music with western beats. Some samples of crescendos (from recent songs - since I can't seem to remember what I ate for dinner last night!!). Please add to these and also let me know your favorite crescendo(s). [arr] Harris Jayaraj to work with Gautham again?
*Harris Jayaraj to work with Gautham again?* Ajay Kumar R [July 23, 2009, 11:54:52 AM] Harris Jayaraj and Gautham Menon formed a terrific combination once upon a time. But due to some difference of opinion, they had split and now, Gautham has roped in A.R. Rahman for his next film. Expectations are running high as people will obviously talk and compare the Harris-Gautham vs. the Gautham-Rahman combine. It is believed that Rahman's numbers for *Vinnaithandi Varuvayaa* are foot-tapping and sure to be a hit! But industry sources say that since Rahman has gone global, he may not be able to work with many directors with whom he had worked in the past. And the next best alternative is Harris Jayaraj in Kollywood! Now is the time to bury old differences; many well-known personalities who were not on good terms in the past have come together to work again. That Yuvanshankar Raja and Selvaraghavan are friends again is a perfect example! It may not be long before we see the magical combination of Harris and Gautham coming together again for a new project. http://telugu.galatta.com/entertainment/telugu/livewire/id/Harris_Jayaraj_to_work_with_Gautham_again_28014.html -- regards, Vithur

VA songs are good..let others also enjoy the taste of awards Had AR been jury, he would have chosen VA as winner!! Winning AR everytime might deject good composers! Gautham Menon and Harris Jayaraj have done a very good job. Therefore, Harris Jayaraj deserves to win this time for VA. James Vasanthan has a chance to win as well. 65% chances for Harris Jayaraj while 35% chances for James Vasnathan. Maybe our boss will win! You never know until results are disclosed. [arr] ARR to compose the music for The Rani
Sahil and Ayesha will be producing a Hollywood project in collaboration with Kevin Spacey. The film titled The Rani will star a Hollywood actor and an Indian actress. If sources are to be believed, they are in talks with Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu to play the female lead. AR Rahman, who had earlier worked with Ayesha in the Amitabh Bachchan-Katrina Kaif starrer Boom, has been signed on to compose film's music. Ayesha is in advanced talks with Sofia Coppola to direct the film, added the source. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/ENTERTAINMENT-Bollywood-News-Interviews-Meet-the-new-man-in-Ayesha-Shroffs-life/articleshow/4797225.cms I am not sure about the credibility of this news since they mention that ARR composed the music for Boom
[arr] Sat, Jul 25 :: Kailash Kher concert in NY :: and a Fans meetup
Hi: I know Kailash Kher is one of our group's favourites - even though he has worked on only a handful of tracks with ARR, he has left a big impact with his unique voice-quality! Think 'Yuh hi chala', 'Mangal mangal' and many more! The good news is he's touring North America according to Cumbancha http://www.cumbancha.com/welcome.php (the guys managing Kailash Kher's in this part of the world) and he's going to perform at a dozen cities here. Even better news is he's doing a concert this weekend ($3 suggested donation) in New York -- as part of 'Celebrate Brooklyn' in Prospect Park. Here are the details: http://www.prospectpark.org/calendar/event/142210 http://newyork.timeout.com/events/reggae-world-latin/295023/kailash-kher\ -electro-morocco (Btw, I'm totally hooked to his new album 'Chaandan Mein'. ) Some of us local-ARR-fans plan to be there. And obviously we would like to meet more fans from the area. If you're game, write back and we can decide a place we can meet. We could meet in Jsy City, en route in Manhattan or directly at Prospect Park. We're also doing a short-fans-meetup before the concert at my apartment - feel free to drop-in for that. So here's the tentative plan: 2pm Fans Meetup (incl. a quick Lunch) 5:30pmLeave 6:30pm@ Prospect Park (to grab good spots) Write to me at 'niyant DOT dalal AT gmail DOT com' so we can discuss details. [arr] SdM to be screened in Parliment..Rahman, Resul and Gulzar to be felicitated
Jai Ho to be screened in LS Saubhadro Chatterji / New Delhi July 24, 2009, 0:54 IST After the Budget, it’ll be time for some Bollywood entertainment in Parliament. The Lok Sabha secretariat has arranged for a special screening of Danny Boyle’s highly-acclaimed film, Slumdog Millionaire, on August 3 for the MPs. But the icing in the cake will be the presence of its Oscar winners—music director A R Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and sound engineer Resul Pookutty—at the special screening. This will be the first time when Rahman and the two other Oscar winners will be felicitated by Parliament for their achievement. The three had won the much-coveted US Oscar awards on February 23. The Congress, meanwhile, had used Rahman’s award winning tune, Jai Ho, as its campaign song during the run-up to the Lok Sabha election. “As per the information available to us, A R Rehman and Resul Pukutty will be present during the special screening in Parliament. We are inviting Gulzaarsaab too,” Lok Sabha secretary-general P D T Achary told Business Standard on Thursday.”We will felicitate them before the film is screened.” It was actually Pookutty’s idea to bring the Oscar winners to Parliament. When Achary contacted Pookutty, currently stationed in the US, about the secretariat’s plan to show the film for the Parliamentarians, Pookutty suggested bringing Rahman there. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are expected to be present at the function. The Lok Sabha secretariat had shown films for the MPs earlier as well but this will be the first time when a commercial film will be screened because of its worldwide fame. Last year, the secretariat screened Shyam Benegal’s Bose: the forgotten Hero for the MPs. Benegal is currently a nominated MP of the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, stalwarts like Lata Mangeshkar (then a Rajya Sabha member) had performed at the special programme held on 50 years of Indian independence in 1997. A few years ago, shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan was also felicitated by the Parliament. Will Rahman perform like Khan or Mangeshkar? Achary doesn’t see much hope: “He is not coming with his musical troop. We can’t ask him to sing just like that.”
