January 2008 (Sawf News) - The release of Ashutosh Gowarikar's period drama
*Jodhaa Akbar* has been pushed back for the third time, from February 24 to
some time in April, because Gowarikar is down with a bad back and has been
advised two months of bed rest.

The film was originally slotted to hit the marquee on October 23, 2007 but
its release date was pushed back to January 25 to absorb a schedule overrun
during filming.

Delays in post production of the film and composition of its musical score
by AR Rahman led to the release date being pushed back for the second time
to February 24.

At the time of the second postponement it was reported that Gowarikar has
been advised 3 weeks bed rest. It is now being reported that he could be off
work for 2 months.

Ashutosh laments his bad back saying, "I am sad that this had to happen in
the thick of post production; it is unfortunate, but it has to be dealt
with."

One of the challenges being faced in post production is the length of the
film. There is enough footage for a five-and-a-half hour run and all of it
has been shot at considerable cost and labor.

Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan are known to have put their heart and
soul into the making of the film and trimming it down to 3 hours will be
heart wrenching for them.

According to HT, the repeated delays are causing discontent amongst cast and
crew members because their work engagement is being extended over longer
periods than originally envisaged without enhanced compensation.

*Musical score for the film is scheduled to be released on January 9 under
film producer UTV's new record label UTV Music.*

Production cost for the film is believed to have gone well past the Rs 50
crore mark, raising hackles with UTV who are bankrolling much of the
project.

MUMBAI: The release of UTV Motion Pictures and Ashutosh Gowariker's epic
romance *Jodhaa Akbar *starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
has been postponed to 15 February 2008. The soundtrack composed by
A.RRahman will release on 9 January through UTV's new record label UTV
Music.

The movie was earlier slated to release on 28 January, 2008. The change of
release date is due to the fact that Gowariker has been advised bed rest for
21 days with a severe back problem.

The director was scheduled to be in Chennai for this entire week to finish
the background score of *Jodhaa Akbar *but could not move out because of
strict instructions from his doctors not to travel.

Gowariker stated, "I am sad that this had to happen in the thick of post
production; it is unfortunate, but it has to be dealt with."

*Jodhaa Akbar *is a sixteenth century story about a marriage of alliance
that brought two diverse souls together to find true love between the
greatest Mughal emperor that ruled Hindustan, Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, and
the fiery young Rajput princess, Jodhaa.

The film is produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Ashutosh Gowariker
Productions.

Ashutosh
Gowarikar's
Jodhaa
Akbar , that
stars the gorgeous Aishwarya
RaiBachchan
and the dashing Hrithik
Roshan in the
title roles, went under the knife, again, because the movie is just too
long.

At present, the new version has two songs edited out, one of which was a
qawwali sung by A R
Rahman, the music
director for the movie.

According to a source, every scene in the movie is important, and Gowarikar
did not want the flow to suffer. Therefore, the lavishly shot songs had to
go.

"It was a very good idea to have a qawwali, as it was a traditional aspect
in the lives of kings. It was difficult for Ashutosh, but he also asked for
Rahman's take on the decision, and chopped the songs off only when Rahman
agreed," the source adds.

The songs will be added in the DVD of the movie. Apparently, Ash wanted to
use it in one of her upcoming movies, but Gowarikar may not agree.

Gowarikar has a reputation for making long movies.

The Aamir Khan starrer
Lagaan was almost
four hours long, and the Shah Rukh
Khanstarrer
Swades was three and
a half hours long.

In more recent times, there is a lot of criticism for the way a movie is
presented, and the director did not want any of that.

According to the source, the final cut, so far, is three and a half hours.
The movie is slated for a January 25 release, and the promos are already on
air.
