Re: Getting started with linux, need some advice
Re: Getting started with linux, need some advice Hi.That depends on what you wanna try regarding to linux, and depending on what your goal is.I started to learn Linux myself a few days ago. My goal was, and still is to set up a server, so I needed to learn how to use the console. My advice is to install Ubuntu, so you can learn the graphical interface and the console as well.I totally agree that you should use a virtual machine so you don't mess something up. I haven't used a virtual machine in Windows, but I hear people are using Virtual box with success. On my Mac I'm using VmWare Fusion, because this is the only software which is fully accessible so far. You can also try VmWare Player which is free. I hear this is very accessible as well.Booting up in Ubuntu using a dvd is also accessible, that is, if you know your computer boots up on the dvd instead of your internal harddrive. But I'll say a virtual machine is the way to go. In this way, you can install for example Ubuntu and mess around with things as you want to. If you mess up anything, you can, as previously mentioned, just throw it away and start from scratch.I currently don't remember how to enable Orca which is the screenreader, but if you do, you have a fully accessible talking installer so you can install it all without needing sighted help. Re: Getting started with linux, need some advice Hello.I reccommend you try GNU/Linux in a virtual machine. In this way, you don't need to uninstall Windows from your computer ortouch your hard drive's partitions. One more benefit of this is that you can install all the distributions thatyou want and if you don't like one you can just delete a file and it's gone.Personally, I use Trisquel (http://trisquel.info/). It's good and itcomes with Orca (the screen reader) out-of-the-box. Re: Getting started with linux, need some advice
Re: Getting started with linux, need some advice Sonar, to me, has the most active developement. But Linux isn't easy, and doesn't have all the cool programs, which is, to me, what makes or breaks a platform, most of the time anyways. But give Sonar a look, it's pretty good.
