Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bettencourt

2017-11-18 Thread momma Goodwin
My maiden name is DeBettencourt and I have come to realize it's actually de
Bettencourt through my years of research. I have seen many spellings on records
like Cheri mentioned but keep the the original spelling and make a note of the
other spellings in the tree records.
I wonder if there is any connection here to my ancestors.

Hi Pat,

Pretty much what Rosemarie said.
Today most (if not all) famillies use the spelling Bettencourt.
The ways you find it spelled throughout the years in the census or the
church records usually can be justified with the fact that priests often
wrote the names like they heard it. You will find Bettencourt, Betencourt,
Bitancur, etc...

Pat, wait for a native speaker to answer you. Double consonants were
dropped in many names and Bettencourt may be Betencourt today.

2017-11-17 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Pat, that's great but verify all! Bettencourt is spelled this way. Just
remember that most of our people were illiterate and didn't know how to
spell, the Census taker didn't have a clue how to spell the name and the
priests of the Azores spelled and abbreviated at will! I have tons of
Bettencourts and probably have *at least* 8 or 9 different spellings and
abbreviations!
