We use bdist_egg always to ship python packages. I haven't personally written any code that obfuscates the main source code, but I think - you can search in those lines. An example of the same is the youtube-dl script. It runs fine but the data could not be viewed - you can check out their code/repository for any information on the way the code is being obfuscated.
