Over decades, BBEdit keeps consistency of a highly efficient and intuitive 
workflow in any kind of text editing and top level integration into the 
operating system, and this level of consistency and efficiency are never risked 
when introducing new features.

I have used the free version I think from the beginning, after and periodically 
trying alternatives, but now I am buying BBEdit :)

Since other editors also do everything I need —  my needs are relatively 
minimal —  the real answer is that the developers clearly love what they 
are creating, who talk to us as the people they are, and who treat us like 
real people. I trust them.
