[Blind-Computing] Accessible Adobe Reader 9 download

2009-01-26 Thread Margaret Thomas
Hi All,

I have Adobe Reader 8 on my XP Home with SP3 machine and have decided that
the time has come to upgrade to version 9. Is the link for "Accessible
Adobe Reader 9 download" at

http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/reader/

the accessible one without the other utilities/programs included? I saw an
old post indicating that it was on the jaws-users site, but I didn't see it
there or on the home page here.

I checked for updates with Adobe Reader and 8.1 was listed and I figured
that it would be easier to just uninstall 8 and install 9.

Thank you,

Margaret

Re: [Blind-Computing] NVDA VERSUS SYSTEM ACCESS TO GO, COMPARISON

2009-01-26 Thread David Griffith
Interesting
I also have the paid version of AVG 8 but System Access does not appear to
be able to read the buttons on the Firewall alert message. Jaws has no
problem reading these messages. However, given that system Access appears
to be able to read some web pages that Jaws cannot cope with the answer
appears to be have a range of screen reader tools available to cope with
whatever problem gets thrown at you.

Ironically Jaws has just crashed on my system as I am typing this. I would
normally switch to NVDA to finish what I am doing and restart my PC.
However there is a problem with NVDA using Microsoft Outlook . Rather than
losing the email I remembered that my old copy of ZoomText had a screen
reader so I am using this to finish off my email! I have ended up using 3
screen readers in less than an hour.

David, I have the paid version of AVG, and it will read the message so you
can allow it through the Fire Wall. Hope this helps someone.

The procedure from what I remember is as follows.

Type www.serotek.com in your run dialogue box.
The Serotek page should tell you to press alt plus s to start System Access.
The Serotek page should then prompt you to press alt plus r.
This will run a short program which installs the Free mobile version of
system Access on your PC.
You now have System Access working in browser only mode. To get it to work
as a full screen reader you need to activate your software. System Access
also ask you to register though this does not appear compulsory.
If you register System Access will email you a free login and pin.

One possible problem may be allowing access to System access through your
firewall. On my firewall System Access does not read the pop up message from
AVG firewall so I had to revert to Jaws to get this permission sorted.

What is the difference between nvida and system access to go? I couldn't

No Deb. You don't download that program unless you are a paying

You can use it free by signing up, getting your account number and
PIN, then going to the site, http://www.satogo.com and signing in

and it will keep on going. That's how it works. The idea was to
create a speech driven screen reader which is accessible to anyone

Hi group. Some of our International members have recommended NVDA as a
possible alternative to Jaws when viewing certain web sites. It's built
with Open Source code and is much more flexible in some cases. It can't
touch Jaws for normal use but I'm already impressed by what it can do.
I'm going to go to one of the most impossible sites I know which is
www.xmradio.com and see what it does.
If anyone has any suggestions about using this free screen reader, I'd
appreciate some help either on or off of the list.
Thanks to those who recommended it as a possible alternative when Jaws
gets picky. LOL!

you mean it did it without you assisting it?
Were you doing some sort of pc maintenance at the time?
That's scarey...
Don't you use Norton? Maybe it did it during a scan?

Hi
Actually, that was pretty funny about leaving the window open.
I am not sure how it happened but at about 2:30 this morning my
computer decided to delete the windows mail folders and send them to the
recycle bin. So, I had to restore them from there. Isn't that a fun way to

Hi, Deb. System access to go wouldn't start for me either. I wanted to
go on it so I could re-register but I couldn't even get in. I contacted
Serotek by email and they said to set internet explorer to the default
settings. I tried doing that and I still got the same message that system
access wouldn't be able to start.

Here is how I dgot System Access site to work. I closed all programs.
Opened my web browser and entered the site name. Then with JAWS still
running I entered on begin. I did not shut JAWS off until I had System
Access installed. Hope this helps!

Hi, John. It really is incredible what system access to go can do. I
signed up for a free account where I log into the site to use the screen
reader and it's wonderful. It really is amazing that you can use it on
any computer. All you have to do is log in type in your account number

I wonder if people realize just how incredible that is? You sit down at
a
computer where you've never been before. With a few keystrokes or even
a
thumb drive if you're a paying customer, you can activate a screen
reader
and navigate quite a bit. Sure, it's limited but can some of these
other

screen readers do that?
I know I'm a newby to this technology and maybe that's why I think it's
amazing. Good to hear from you Rosemary.

you

can use it on any computer.

No Deb. You don't download that program unless you are a paying
customer.
You can use it free by signing up, getting your account number and
PIN,

then
going to the site, http://www.satogo.com
and signing in again. Now, once SA is running, you can move to any
site
you
want and it will keep on going. That's how it works. The idea was
to

create a speech driven screen reader which is accessible to anyone on
any
computer with a sound board. The great part is that you can change
the

voices, speed, volume and so on and then save them. If you have an
account,
you can then bring up that screen reader wherever you are. I used it
once
at my niece's house and she and her husband were amazed. I could
navigate
her computer resonably well except for the areas where she had
changed

things like the screen magnification and things like that.
What an incredibel tool!

Re: [Blind-Computing] digital recorder question

2009-01-26 Thread Bruce Toews
The difference is that each has a different focus. The Olympus, from all
that I've heard, is meant to be a middle-of-the-road recorder that can
do stereo and so on. It has some playback capabilities, but nothing
special, and was not specifically designed for the blind. The stream is
a bottom-end recorder, sicne its role as a recording device is tertiary
in importance. Its primary purpose is that of a book reader, its
secondary purpose that of a music player. It is also fully accessible,
being designed from the bottom up to be for the blind.

I've been really happy with the Olympus DS-30, DS-40, and DS-50 digital
recorders, as these have voice output for some of the features. You can
connect them to the computer and transfer files back and forth between the
computer and digital recorder via MyComputer or Window Explorer, so JAWS
works well with this. I've not tried to use the software that comes with
these devices, so I do not know if JAWS works with it.

Some of the lower end Olympus digital recorders are great for just
recording
multiple notes, but they do not interface with the computer, thus not JAWS
compatible.

. These are in no way in the same category as the Victor Stream, so I'm
not sure if I have provided you with the info you are wanting.

No Deb. You don't download that program unless you are a paying
customer.

You can use it free by signing up, getting your account number and PIN,
then
going to the site, http://www.satogo.com and signing in again. Now, once
SA
is running, you can move to any site you want and it will keep on going.
That's how it works. The idea was to create a speech driven screen
reader

which is accessible to anyone on any computer with a sound board. The
great
part is that you can change the voices, speed, volume and so on and then
save them. If you have an account, you can then bring up that screen
reader
wherever you are. I used it once at my niece's house and she and her
husband were amazed. I could navigate her computer resonably well except
for the areas where she had changed things like the screen magnification
and
things like that.
What an incredibel tool!

I used the web site http://www.xmradio.com as a test and ran both
screen
readers.
I tried to use NVDA first. On that web site you will need to choose
"Full
Channel Line Up" to experience the same situation.

With Jaws and NVDA , the speech quit almost immediately. As I mentioned
in
an earlier message, I believe that the problem exists in the fact that
there
are Flash links all over this page. Jaws and NVDA both got jammed up
by
these links and quit entirely. There was literally no way to get them
back
and I tried everything.

Next, I took System Access To Go for a spin and what do you know, it
worked!
For some reason, I'm still not sure why, SA read the links but did not
get
hung up.
On our list is a member called Debbie. She mentioned a web site
provided

by
ABC, http://www.abc.com and I think that this site has the same problems
as
the newly designed XM Radio page does.

CONCLUSION: For some limited purposes, System Access, although it's a
very
limited tool, will work where Jaws and NVDA do not.

I thought some of the people here might find this interesting.

Hi, John. It really is incredible what system access to go can do. I
signed up for a free account where I log into the site to use the screen
reader and it's wonderful. It really is amazing that you can use it on
any computer. All you have to do is log in type in your account number
(phone number), your pin number and you're good to go.

No Deb. You don't download that program unless you are a paying
customer.
You can use it free by signing up, getting your account number and
PIN,

then
going to the site, http://www.satogo.com
and signing in again. Now, once SA is running, you can move to any
site
you
want and it will keep on going. That's how it works. The idea was to
create a speech driven screen reader which is accessible to anyone on
any
computer with a sound board. The great part is that you can change
the

voices, speed, volume and so on and then save them. If you have an
account,
you can then bring up that screen reader wherever you are. I used it
once
at my niece's house and she and her husband were amazed. I could
navigate
her computer resonably well except for the areas where she had changed
things like the screen magnification and things like that.

The procedure from what I remember is as follows.

Type www.serotek.com in your run dialogue box.
The Serotek page should tell you to press alt plus s to start System
Access.

One possible problem may be allowing access to System access through your
firewall. On my firewall System Access does not read the pop up message
from

AVG firewall so I had to revert to Jaws to get this permission sorted.

Hi:

When my husband reinstalled XP a couple weeks ago we failed to make sure
I had Adobe flash player. That's why those stupid flash messages
weren't opening for me and I could actually navigate the site. I can't
play most videos on Youtube or just about anywhere for that matter. I
do wish I had 2 computers. At any rate, if anybody wants content off of
the site such as the channel lineup emailed to them privately I would be
more than happy to do that for you. Just let me know. You would think
it wouldn't be that hard to have a link to a flash free site as Sirius
did years ago. You could have it either way. take care.

The idea was
to
create a speech driven screen reader which is accessible to anyone
on
 any
computer with a sound board. The great part is that you can change
the
voices, speed, volume and so on and then save them. If you have an
 account,
you can then bring up that screen reader wherever you are. I used
it
 once
at my niece's house and she and her husband were amazed. I could
 navigate
her computer resonably well except for the areas where she had
changed
things like the screen magnification and things like that.
 What an incredibel tool!

What is the difference between nvida and system access to go? I couldn't
access either website. On the system access to go, it gave a welcome message
and to hit enter to begin then threw me back to the blind computing message.

Hi, John. It really is incredible what system access to go can do. I
signed up for a free account where I log into the site to use the screen
reader and it's wonderful. It really is amazing that you can use it on
any computer. All you have to do is log in type in your account number
(phone number), your pin number and you're good to go.

I wonder if people realize just how incredible that is? You sit down at a
computer where you've never been before. With a few keystrokes or even a
thumb drive if you're a paying customer, you can activate a screen reader
and navigate quite a bit. Sure, it's limited but can some of these other
screen readers do that?
I know I'm a newby to this technology and maybe that's why I think it's
amazing. Good to hear from you Rosemary.

Hi, John. I use system access to go when I shop on the Albertsons

and it's wonderful. I don't get that weird technical error message when
I'm trying to read my order to see if it went through. I like that you
can use it on any computer.

I used the web site http://www.xmradio.com as a test and ran both
screen
readers.
I tried to use NVDA first. On that web site you will need to choose
"Full
Channel Line Up" to experience the same situation.

With Jaws and NVDA , the speech quit almost immediately. As I
mentioned

in
an earlier message, I believe that the problem exists in the fact that
there
are Flash links all over this page. Jaws and NVDA both got jammed
up

by
these links and quit entirely. There was literally no way to get them
back
and I tried everything.

Next, I took System Access To Go for a spin and what do you know, it
worked!
For some reason, I'm still not sure why, SA read the links but did
not

get
hung up.
On our list is a member called Debbie. She mentioned a web site
provided
by
ABC, http://www.abc.com and I think that this site has the same
problems

as
the newly designed XM Radio page does.

CONCLUSION: For some limited purposes, System Access, although it's a
very
limited tool, will work where Jaws and NVDA do not.

I thought some of the people here might find this interesting.

When we try that site, it says welcome to system access, press enter to
begin. When we press enter it just repeats the welcome phrase. How do you
gain access to the site in order to set up an account and what is the price
of this program?
