Re: Sharing files between Linux and Windows
Hi, John: I'm afraid that building a custom laptop is virtually impossible. Even though you can get all the parts, you need a suitable case, and these aren't of the shelf items. Creating a case to specs is a would cost literally hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, I think laptops will need to be pretty much off the shelf purchases. It's totaly the opposite situation of building your own desktop/tower system. Janina John J. Boyer writes: > Hi Janina, > > Building or rather designing my own computer would be fun. Re: Sharing files between Linux and Windows
It looks right to me assuming your user name is lshare. Surely, you don't usually log in as lshare, do you? You can create a user just for sharing files but you are going to run into a lot of permissions problems. It would be better just to use the user name you usually log in as. In fact, I always use the same user name and password in both linux and Windows to make it easier to map a share in Windows. On 07/07/2016 11:05 AM, John J. Re: Sharing files between Linux and Windows
You won't be able to find a existing case with space for an integrated braille display. It might be possible to install linux on a Pac Mate though. I had a Pac Mate with a 40 cell display. I still use the display every day but it is attached to my linux desktop. The Pac Mate itselfis gone. The battery blew up and the keyboard went bad. But I'll bet I could buy just the Pac Mate part for $100 these days. It might take more brains than I have to install linux on that thing though. Another option is to design your own case and have it printed on a 3D printer. But I don't think it's practical for a blind person to do that because the 3D drawing software is not going to be accessible. The whole thing could be a business opportunity for someone though. Start with a raspberry pi or something like that, design a case with an integrated braille display, and start selling linux notetakers. On 07/07/2016 10:53 AM, John J. those PCIX drives as mentioned above. My OS is currently on an OCZ Agility 60Gb SATA connected SSD that I paid $60 for some 4-5 years ago. It's been a fabulous drive for me and it's still working flawlessly. The only reason I'm even considering replacing it is the much, much faster performance of a drive that talks to the CPU over PCIX. I want to set up a device on my Linux machine which is connected with this folder over my LAN. I know that this can be done, because I had something similar at one time. However, i'm not certain how to do it again. If I remember, it just took an entry in fstab and an entry in /dev. Thanks. John -- John J. Boyer; President, AbilitiesSoft, Inc. Re: Sharing files between Linux and Windows
I have Windows 7. However, I'm thinking of buying a Windows 10 machine. My present Linux machine fails intermittently with various error messages. Since it is intermittent it could be very hard to diagnose. The machine is ten years old, so buying a new one might be the best idea. I tried to install a samba server on Windows. However, the Geek Squad agent who was helping said he didn't know enough to proceed. If I go to the Samba website, what should I do? Re: Sharing files between Linux and Windows
Well, now that I've spoken up for samba, let me amend my thoughts slightly ... Yes, I think nfs would be easier, but I've usually run into problems getting nfs supported on Windows when I've tried to do that. However, now that bash and apt-get has come to Windows 10, maybe this will get much easier? That's worth exploring, imo. PS: I'm not aware the Windows 10 update which provides bash and apt-get is out yet, but it's due very soon, if not already out. Ditto. I've also only every used Samba for this. Note, however, that once you have Samba set up, you can perfectly access the Windows folder from the Linux command line. Re: Sharing files between Linux and Windows
The following mount command mounts a cifs file system, I.E. your Windows share, under the mount point called note. The share is called bid and the user is also called bid. One is prompted for a password when the mount is envoced, but there are ways to automate this. mount -tcifs //146.64.28.229/bid note -o username=bid I would really not use NFS as suggested by someone on the list, as it is not verry secure and SAMBA works well. RE: Sharing files between Linux and Windows
I recommend using NFS server in Windows to serve the share to the Linux client and Linux will be fine. Just mount it somewhere on your Linux directory tree using NFS. Much easier than fiddling around with Samba. Lots of free Windows NFS server sw out there and even comes as part of certain windows versionns. Have a google.
