I had the same issue. The resolutions goes like that: in beforeFilter i invoke: public function beforeFilter() { $this-pageTitle = 'Portfolio'; $this-Portfolio-bindModel(array( 'belongsTo' = array('Category'), 'hasMany' = array('Image'))); } And then you have an access to all related models.
