[cayugabirds-l] Not Greater White-fronted Goose?!?

Yesterday I reported that Sara Jane and I had seen a Greater 
White-fronted Goose at Larue's in Montezuma.  Dave Nutter and Jay wrote 
to ask if it might have been a Greylag X Canada instead.  Seeing that 
the hybrid had been seen off and on this summer and fall at Larue's, 
it's very likely that's what it was.  The bird we saw was resting with 
its head tucked facing away from us.  We made the assumption from what 
we could see --- coloration, barring on flank --- that it was a Greater 
White-fronted.  Had I known that the hybrid was a distinct possibility, 
I would have gotten out of the car and started jumping up and down 
waving my arms and shouting to get the bird to look up.  (LOL for those 
who don't know I'm just kidding around!!)

[cayugabirds-l] White-winged Crossbill

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Thursday Morning

I enjoyed sorting through a nice diversity of birds at Stewart Park this
morning.  The juvenile RED-THROATED-LOON was much closer today, right behind
the red jetty; and a new flotilla of Aythya ducks arrived overnight.  A
BRANT with the Mallards east of the dock was the first I've seen since
October.

The "Moist Soil Unit" was the earlier "unofficial" name.  And Larue's Lagoon is 
actually "Lesser Yellowlegs."  
They should have had a naming contest.

afternoon.  Among the waterfowl seen were Mallard, Gadwall, Northern
Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Scaup (sp.), Ring-necked
Duck, and Ruddy Duck.  A couple birds of special interest were a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Larue's Lagoon and a DUNLIN at the new wet area
on the left side of the north end of the first long straight stretch of
the Auto Loop (someone needs to give it a name!!!).  Isn't this getting
a little late for shorebirds to still be here, or has the nice weather
caused some individuals to tarry awhile longer?

Don't know if we were seeing Cackling Geese, but we noticed considerable
size variation among some of the Canada Geese in the new wet area.  Some
seemed smaller than normal, and there was one individual that was much
larger than the rest.  Could these differences be due to different
subspecies that just happened to be there at the time, or can there be
substantial variation like this in a population of a single subspecies?
When casually viewing flocks of Canada's in the past, we can't recall
ever noticing this much variation in size.
