Re: [cayugabirds-l] New bird
Tree Sparrows have been here for a week now as White-Crowns departed. Plenty of Goldfinch and Juncos now and the White-throats are sparse but settling in for the winter. Have yet to see a Rough-legged but wintering Red-tails are here in numbers . I expect that the pheasant pens should be surrounded. We went up to the Interlaken waterfront and other than geese there were a few loons, blacks and Herring gull. John @ Kestrel Haven Observatory, Fitzgerald Rd. I wrote too soon. I’ve got 2 Fox Sparrows. Then an American Tree Sparrow showed up, FOS. After that a large group of Juncos showed up, but I’ve been getting them. The Red Bellied Woodpeckers have shown up. I’ve rarely had them for the past year so I’m delighted to see them regularly again. Still hoping for Grosbeaks. [cayugabirds-l] New bird
Just had my first returning White Throated Sparrow. It had the brown stripes on its head rather than the white ones, but it had a lovely white throat. Lillian Stokes said she had them in NH at her home. It sure got here fast. [cayugabirds-l] New bird
Well better late than never I guess. I had a Pine Siskin, finally. There may be two of them, but I only saw one.One was on the feeder and I thought I heard another vocalizing not far away. The first time I ever had one in my yard was at this time of year. My White Crown Sparrows, 4, are still here. Another one of my resident birds has shown up, a Willow Flycatcher. I never saw him, but heard him fitz-bew. I also am hearing the Yellow Warbler and Yellowthroat. It was a great morning to be out. The traffic on rt. 20 is less, thus it's quieter, and I can hear more birds. The Warbling Vireo has been singing all day so far. I can hear him on the sunporch. Re: [cayugabirds-l] New bird
We never got any White-throated Sparrows this year. Did get a couple of White-Crowned. We have a loyal population of Pine Siskins due to the thistle feeder I put up. They started hear when there was just sunflower seed but they really seem to love thistle seed. A moment ago I thought I heard an Eastern Meadowlark singing from our front yard. And I'm finally consistently hearing Bobolinks from the adjacent field. On a picnic with my dad at Filmore Glen I enjoyed observing the Barn Swallows and their nests inside the First Aid and Lifeguards building. And right on the other side of the road from my house, about 30' into the empty mowed field next to an iced over wet spot. 2 common snipe, feeding or trying to feed.
