[ceph-users] New Ceph Community Manager
Hey cephers, As most of you know, my last day as the Ceph community lead is next Wed (26 July). The good news is that we now have a replacement who will be starting immediately! I would like to introduce you to Leo Vaz who, until recently, has been working as a maintenance engineer with a focus on Ceph (and Gluster). Leo also is a long time open source participant with efforts around community organization and event management, helping to promote many open source projects at places like FISL [0] and Latinoware [1]. Leo is a founder and community manager of Tchelinux Free Software Users group [2] and in 2009 became a Fedora Ambassador. Leo has a great mix of the “gritty, just-get-it-done” ethos needed in a FOSS project as well as a great deal of professional drive and experience. I’m sure he will be a fabulous addition to the public face of Ceph, and I hope you all take the time to extend a warm welcome as he starts getting settled. If you have any questions for me before 26 July, feel free to contact me directly, otherwise I wish you all the best of luck and hope you keep changing the world one Ceph install at a time! [ceph-users] CDM APAC
Hey cephers, While tonight was my last CDM, I am considering a recommendation to my replacement that we stop the alternating time zone and just standardize on a NA/EMEA time slot. Attendance typically is much better (even amongst APAC developers) during the NA/EMEA times. So, if you want us to continue alternating times please speak up and make yourself known. [ceph-users] Help build a drive reliability service!
Hey cephers, Just wanted to share the genesis of a new community project that could use a few helping hands (and any amount of feedback/discussion that you might like to offer). As a bit of backstory, around 2013 the Backblaze folks started publishing statistics about hard drive reliability from within their data center for the world to consume. This included things like model, make, failure state, and SMART data. If you would like to view the Backblaze data set, you can find it at: https://www.backblaze.com/b2/hard-drive-test-data.html While most major cloud providers are doing this for themselves internally, we would like to replicate/enhance this effort across a much wider segment of the population as a free service. I think we have a pretty good handle on the server/platform side of things, and a couple of people who have expressed interest in building the reliability model (although we could always use more!), what we really need is a passionate volunteer who would like to come forward to write the agent that sits on the drives, aggregates data, and submits daily stats reports via an API (and potentially receives information back as results are calculated about MTTF or potential to fail in the next 24-48 hrs). Currently my thinking is to build our collection method based on the Backblaze data set so that we can use it to train our model and build from going forward. If this sounds like a project you would like to be involved in (especially if you're from Backblaze!) please let me know. I think a first pass of the agent should be something we can build in a couple of afternoons to start testing with a small pilot group that we already have available. Happy to entertain any thoughts or feedback that people might have. [ceph-users] Scuttlemonkey signing off...
Hey cephers, I'm writing to you today to share that my time in the Ceph community is coming to an end this year. The last five years (!!) of working with the Ceph community have yielded some of the most rewarding adventures of my professional career, but a new opportunity has come along that I just couldn't pass up. I will continue to work through the end of July in order to transition my responsibilities to a replacement. In the spirit of Ceph openness, I am currently assisting Stormy Peters (Red Hat's senior community manager - sto...@redhat.com) in seeking candidates, so if you know anyone who might be interested in managing the Ceph community, please let me know. While this is definitely bittersweet for me, the Ceph community has done a good job of self-managing, self-healing, and replicating just like the underlying technology, so I know you are all in good hands (each others!). If you would like to keep in touch, or have questions beyond the time I am able to answer my @redhat.com email address, feel free to reach out to me at pmcga...@gmail.com and I'll be happy to catch up. If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime feel free to reach out to me directly, but I'll do my best to ensure there is minimal distruption during this transition. Thank you to all of you in the Ceph community who have made this journey so rewarding. [ceph-users] CentOS Storage SIG
Hey cephers, Just wanted to put this out there in case there were any package-maintenance wizards itching to contribute. The CentOS storage SIG has worked hard to make sure that Ceph builds make it through their own build system and have published two releases based on Jewel and Hammer. The current maintainer is looking for a bit of co-maintainer help to augment his efforts when things like travel cause interruptions. If anyone is interested in potentially stepping up into this role please let me know and I'll help get you connected. Hey Cephers, Due to Dreamhost shutting down the old DreamCompute cluster in their US-East 1 region, we are in the process of beginning the migration of Ceph infrastructure. We will need to move download.ceph.com, tracker.ceph.com, and docs.ceph.com to their US-East 2 region. The current plan is to move the VMs on 25 NOV 2016 throughout the day. Expect them to be down intermittently. Ceph.com will remain up for migration at a later date, and already has a message in the banner about the outage. Expect to see notifications/banners on some of the other sites as well, but this should serve as your main notification. Her cephers, I wanted to both post a reminder that our Ceph Developer Monthly meeting was tonight at 9p EDT, and pose a question: Are periodic Ceph Developer Meetings helpful and desired? Lately the participation has been sadly lacking, and I want to make sure we are providing a worthwhile platform for the community to discuss and collaborate. If people still desire the CDM platform, we will need to see much better participation in the pre-event planning. All that we ask there is a simple one-line description and maybe a link to a planning doc (a much lighter requirement than the blueprint process). http://wiki.ceph.com/CDM_02-NOV-2016 If the CDM format is not helpful, I would like to know so that we can either alter or discontinue. [ceph-users] Aug CDM
Hey cephers, A reminder that our next Ceph Developer Monthly is coming up on 03 Aug @ 12:30p EDT. Please visit the wiki and enter your blueprints for discussion, even if it’s just a placeholder. All major work being done on Ceph should have a blueprint at CDM, even if it’s just a brief outline so we have a chance to get an update on work and status. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. [ceph-users] Ceph Tech Talk next week
Hey cephers, As of right now I have no one slated for the Ceph Tech Talk next week. Unless I get someone into that slot by the end of this week or maybe Monday at the latest, we’ll have to cancel the slot. [ceph-users] Ceph Social Media
Hey cephers, Just wanted to remind everyone that our Ceph social media channels are for all upstream consumption. If you are doing something cool with Ceph, have a new feature/integration to announce, or just some piece of news that would be of-interest to the Ceph community, please send it my way! I'm happy to answer/RT anything that gets sent to Ceph channels directly, or you can just email the information to me and I'll get it out as soon as possible. What I wont do is simply advertise for someone's product (which goes for Red Hat too), so make sure that it has a technology/community angle and we'll be happy to promote it. Current default promotion channels are: Twitter (https://twitter.com/ceph) Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/cephstorage) Google+ (https://plus.google.com/communities/116115281445231966828) Have had a couple of people ask me about it in recent history, so wanted to reiterate for the broader community that these channels exist to promote Ceph, not any single company (or group of companies) within our ecosystem. Hey cephers, For those who have been asking for an official Ceph Slack channel, we now have a bridge between #ceph/#ceph-devel and corresponding Slack channels. https://ceph-storage.slack.com/signup Right now the email domains that will auto-accept registration are relatively limited, but any slack member can invite you. If you would like to use Slack feel free to ask in #ceph / #ceph-devel, or just reply to this email and I’ll get you added. As a note, we will not be moving away from an open platform like IRC, this is just extending our communication channels to allow a broader audience to participate if they so choose. [ceph-users] Want to present at FISL Brazil?
Hey cephers, As a part of my budget this year I am starting the process of raising awareness around Ceph in the LATAM region. One of the things I am starting with is having the Ceph Community sponsor FISL in Porto Alegre, Brazil (13-16 July). Thankfully our sponsorship negotiations we have been blessed with an unexpected additional speaking slot. Rather than monopolize this within the confines of Red Hat, I wanted to extend an offer to the community to come present and socialize at the booth with us. If anyone is interested please let me know as soon as humanly possible. Speaking slots appear to be ~1hr and the talk can be anything Ceph-related. If you are interested please send me: 1) Name 2) Org 3) Talk Title 4) Abstract 5) Speaker Bio US citizens, keep in mind the visa process for Brazil is quite onerous, so it may be costly in both time and money to get it processed in time.
