Re: Bilingual App HELP!!
Yes, you can do exactly that. Put all your language values into variables in the code, the pull the language variables from either the appropriate include file or a database. > Hey guys, any of yall Familiar with the Houston International > Festival? RE: Bilingual App HELP!!
One method I've seen is to use a translation table. Basically, you know what info you're looking for, and the target language, and you can use this to retrieve the required text. I would avoid doing this for articles, but stuff like navigation text, status messages, alert box text, etc. would work ok. So, basically, your table would be something like this: TranslationTable Language (pk) MessageCode (pk) TextValue OrdinalValue then a simple query like select Textvalue From TranslationTable Where MessageCode = 'Navigation' order by OrdinalValue would get you the correct language, and the right order. You might even be able to tie this in with XML in some way to make life easier. The other suggestions are valid as well, but I haven't seen them in action, so can't really comment on them. My thoughts. Shawn Grover -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, June 07, 2002 12:47 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: Bilingual App HELP!! RE: Bilingual App HELP!!
I've had to deal with similar issues on our site which has some bilingual sections. It's never easy and I don't know that there is a single good "catch-all" approach, but here is what I have found to work pretty well... Take a look at http://www.microjuris.com/Profile.cfm Profile.cfm is just a shell page which contains cf code as well as the page layout. The actual content is stored in html stub files. For each section of the profile there are two files (for example MarketPotential_EN.html and MarketPotential_ES.html). The current language is stored in a Cookie in this case, but it doesn't especially matter, Session or client vars work just as well. So then for each section I just cfinclude template="#SectionName#_#CurrentLanguage#.html". The graphics which are language dependant take a similar approach (ie Header_EN.gif and Header_ES.gif). This makes updating the content pretty trivial as there is no cf code change involved. Anyone familiar with basic html tags can edit the include pages, or use a WYSIWYG editor on them and be oblivious to the html. For shorter, more frequently used phrases like "Submit" or "Next" you may want to consider using variables or the database to store them along with their translations. The approach you take will probably depend on the type of content and how often it will be used. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, June 07, 2002 2:47 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: Bilingual App HELP!! RE: Bilingual App HELP!!
Try this as well. http://www.devx.com/xml/articles/kc1100/cox01-1.asp We took this idea and loaded the XML file into an application variable after de-serializing it with a cfwddx call. Sample of the XML file. English|Spanish en|es 2nd Download Fee:|Costo de la Segunda Descarga: Zoom Settings|Ajustes del Zoom Then we use this to get the correct language out. Client.langid is the numeric position in the list where the correct text is at. It is defined as being the index of the language ID in the 1LANGCODE element of the table. #listgetat(application.translate["2NDDOWNLOAD"],Int(client.langid) ,"|")# We support English, German, Spanish and Italian at the moment. Clearly we also wrote a nice application that displays the whole table and lets us edit it simply. One of these days I am going to replace all of the LISTGETAT stuff with a UDF that will guarantee that if the translated text doesn't exist we will at least get the English back. For any graphics we have different image subdirectories with those there. images_en, images_es ... The path is set in the app_globals (We use FuseBox 2.0) like this: Finally we check the language of the browser and default to the correct one if it is supported otherwise we use English. We have links on the site that let the user change the language and we store that as a client variable so we know the next time they come back what language they wanted. It is also stored in the database so if they log in from a new machine we can give them the correct language.
