Re: [Chevelle-list] alternator stopped charging new with old
You probably have an old DN model. You can't use the external regulator with an internal one. It's one or the other. If your not concerned about being correct as far as originality, I would suggest you move up to a SI alternator. A 12SI 94 amp is simple to install. They're are several sites to help you do this. These are a couple of links for you to look at. This is a good article... http://hotrod.com/techarticles/pit/index15.html also M.A.D. has alot of info. http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/delcoremy.shtml The fact that you have a serpentine belt means nothing as far as which alt. you have. You can put that belt on just about anything with the right pulleys. Hope this helps you out. I did this swap to a 12 SI on my '66. You won't regret it. Especially if your in a slow cruise. And if you add air, radio amp, elect. fans, etc later on you'll be all set with enough amps to run everything. --- Al Hembd [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am not sure if it is a 10si or a 12si it has a serpentine belt. The battery is good it holds a charge. The car does not run when the battery cable is pulled off. The car dies. Is it ok to run the old voltage regulator with the alt that has the built in regulator. When I turn the key on with out the car running should I have 12 voltage at the alt and what wire should it be. I believe that on the alt, on the back where the wires plug in there is the letter F on one side and not sure the letter on the other side of the plug in. I am going to take the alt off and have it checked. But back again to the switched hot wire to the alt? If there is not a hot to the alt do I go back to the external voltage regulator. You will only have as many volts at the alt. as you have in the battery with the car not running. You can check the alt. With a volt meter on DC you can check at the battery or on the bus bar of your horn relay(10 ga. red wire) while the engine is running at about 2400 rpm. You should show about 14.5 volts. If not, take your alt. to a store that can check it. This test is not always accurate. You may have a bad alt. and the thing will test good. The charging wire going to the regulator will be a 20 ga. red. It should be the 2nd wire from the pass. side. You may have a weak battery also that won't hold a charge. --- Al Hembd [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a question I have a 70 Chevelle SS and when I got it a new style alternator and the original voltage regulator is on it. and it stopped charging. [Chevelle-list] dash lights fuse
Does anybody know the number of the fuse for the dash instrument lights? It's the short fuse all the way on the bottom of the 1969 fuse block. I am guessing SFE-4 because that's what my 1968 Olds called for and the El Camino fuse block does indicate that it should be a 4A fuse. I have a AGW-5 here but it seems too long to fit into the spot (even though it's shorter than my other fuses). Thanks, John Nasta

[Chevelle-list] Rims
Hi guys I bought a set of early 70's Chevelle SS rims (15"). I am planning on putting them on my 68 Chevelle. I was wondering what size would be acceptable. I am looking for a nice wide stance but nothing real crazy. Anybody have any prefferences or ideas?? I am also looking at getting them chromed. I think they where originally a dark grey but they would look sweet chromed. Any thoughts on that? Thanks Ryan

Larry The rims are 15 x7's. Now time for a rookie question how do you accuratly measure offset? Thanks Ryan

[Chevelle-list] Octane (OT)
Hi guys. I have a 350 that is still factory original ('87), and was built to run on 87 octane and has for years. Lately, it has pinged and rattled a lot and I tried 93 octane and that really made a difference. My question is what has happened (worn out?) to cause the need for the extra octane? Any ideas? Re: [Chevelle-list] Octane (OT)
simple,,carbon has built up on the top of your pistons,,in effect raising your compression slightly, hence requiring a higher octane fuel. - Original Message - From: Brian Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2005 7:39 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Octane (OT) Hi guys. Re: [Chevelle-list] Octane (OT)
Maybe the timing has jumped ahead a bit, a tooth or so on the timing chain would increase the timing and cause some detonation that would get better with higher octane. I'm probably wrong, but if the engine has enough miles it could be possible. -- Shawn Price Network Team Lead Technology Solutions Morrison Homes 404-427-8229 On Sep 15, 2005, at 8:39 PM, Brian Knight wrote: Hi guys. i have 15 inch rallys on my chevelle 7's in the front and 8's in the bac i run 225 70 on front anf 255 70 on rear they fill the wheel house up and with air shocks down give it kinda a tubed out look
Re: [Chevelle-list] Octane (OT)
I thought of that but didn't think it could build up that much. It has 130,000 miles on it. Any suggestions short of a rebuild? It runs great for the mileage it has. Re: [Chevelle-list] Rims
My 68 had 15 x 7 Rally wheels when I got it with 245-60 Goodrich T/A's on it. I didn't have any rub problems the car handled good. Today I mounted my new 225-70-14 Red Stripes on the car with stock 14 x 6 steel wheels and the factory SS 396 wheel covers. I'm going for the original look, to me, the red stripes look a lot better. If anyone on the list is interested in these wheels tires (tires have about 5K miles), let me know, they are for sale. I haven't set a price yet, I just now took them off. To me, chrome looks good on dark colors, not as good on light colors. JMO BillL At 06:31 PM 9/15/2005, you wrote: Hi guys I bought a set of early 70's Chevelle SS rims (15). [Chevelle-list] FW wheel code
I have some 15 x 7 Rally wheels with a FW code. Any of you know what they're off of?? TIA BillL
Re: [Chevelle-list] Rims
Bill, I agree that chrome looks better on dark color cars. With light colors they almost get lost in paint and that defeats the purpose of the chrome in the first place..
