[Chevelle-list] Location of shifter
I need to make a custom bracket to attach the shifter to the transmission... It's a Muncie transmission with a Hurst Competition Plus shifter that is going into a '68 Chevelle. It's supposed to fit inside the stock console. I noticed the shifter stick has a 90-degree jog in it, pushing the stick toward the passenger side... Just wondering where the stick ends up. I'd like to assume it's centered down the centerline of the transmission. I have nothing to check it against since the floor is all new. Does anyone have the same transmission and shifter? With the transmission in 3rd or 4th gear; how far from the edge of the stick to say, the driver door panel or center of the steering column? Re: [Chevelle-list] Location of shifter
I ran a Hurst super shifter with Muncie 4 gear in my 69 before I started the resto. The shifter came right up the factory hole in the floor with no mods but the shifter handle was too short to use the console. Re: [Chevelle-list] Location of shifter
The Competition Plus is/was different than the Super Shifter. The Super Shifter was a 'generic' unit and sat the housing in a straight line with the shift rods with the installation kit (rods, shift arms, etc.) being the only difference between various transmissions. The Comp Plus is/was a 'bolt-in' to replace the original Muncie unit with installation kits and shifter body tailored to specific applications. The shift handle on the 68 unit is shown to be bent about 1 toward the driver half-way up the handle. Isn't this bend applicable to the original unit? Interior photos I have of 68s with a console appear to show a bend. Could it be you might have the wrong installation kit or shift tower? Maybe a 64-67 unit or a 69-72 unit? My 2005 Hurst .PDF shows a 68 with a Muncie is different from 64-67 and 69-72 units. Installation kit (373 3163) is the same as 64-67 due to the attachment arms but the shifter only (391 8014) is the same as the 69-72 Muncie units. Hurst makes a bunch of sticks I bought one for $5 at Carlisle. Check the web site you will find one long enough or bent the way you need it.
