Re: [Chevelle-List] Driving/Car Safety
yeah i love the speed and all, but what i didnt mention was that fact that when im super nervous, my legs shake really badly. I had a jacket around my legs the whole time. Not necessarily driving stupid was a blast, people i was with made it fun.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Driving/Car Safety
Tom, I completly agree with you. My Dad told me right when I got my license that everybody at 16-17 thinks they know how to drive, or can take thier car to the max. I always kept this in the back of my head. Tonight for example, Im with my friend Ryan. We are in a 1992 Ford Taurus. We are blowing through stop signs, going over 100MPH, chasing some truck around. Sure I had a blast, but when we were talking about it afterwards, He was saying "Oh I know the limits of the car." Knowing the limits is one thing, but road conditions, tempature, etc, all play a big part. Im 17, and I NEVER drive fast in my Chevelle unless Im on the freeway and there is nobody there and I have the gas and money or whatever. Even when Im feeling confident in myself at whatever unsafe thing I do, I always here my Dad telling me that. The only problem with changing the law to 18, would be getting to school and work. Perhaps a work and school license only till 18. I know that my Dad isnt just pulling this knowl! edge out of thin air. I dont want to screw up, or wreck my Chevelle. I listen to him, because its his choice to let me drive. Not my decision. -Tim 1966 Chevelle

I was very lucky that this was a small town cop that would rather scare the crap out of me then necesarrily prosecute. Being a cop today is a tough job. Unfortunetly I think besides getting a bad rep from the 3% who break the rules, that also the increased need for them has led to many of the wrong types of people/personalities to get in to the field. It seems alot of officer these days want to make arrests and TELL people how to live and do things, rather then ENFORCE the rules and remember they are not some high almight being. That's just my $.02 worth on the situation, but no matter what type of officer... I'm glad they do their job because I don't think I could do it. Well, I'm almost 56 and I got a ~learner's permit~ when I was 16. I could drive, during daylight hours only, with a licensed driver in the car...and that was 40 years ago in Kansas City. Icouldn't even ride a MoPed (anyone remember those) legally at 16. I'm sure different states have different laws by now but I'd go for 16 under the same restrictions and possibly a daytime only (and alone) license with the completion and passing of a high school or Votech type school driver's education class. I say "hey... if you can't find the driver's exam station you already fail map reading, trip preperation, and sign reading. You fail." IMO I would raise the driving age for lic. to 18 and keep permits or restricted lic. at 16. And make a real driving test to pass. Although some of us are guilty of indulging in the thrill that a muscle car is so famous for, and I can't say I won't ever myself. I guess it's like rock climbing or parachuting..with added dangers for innocent bystanders and precious classic cars that may not survive to be passed on. Compare that to a young person ( and some older ones ) who only think to get in, turn the key, and press the pedal farther down to hurry up to get to an "important appointment". I know that accidents were stressed to me in drivers training many years ago, but people tendto think it won't happen to them and what can happen if they are not careful goes to the back of the mind. Getting there quickly while doing other things that "need" to get done are what is on their mind. The thought of the car I am rebuilding not having many of the safety features of today's cars also plays on my mind at times. More than once I have wondered what it would take to install anti-lock brakesand air bags on my 69 Chevelle. Steve - I agree too! BUT, I've seen people reading newspapers, shaving, putting on make-up, eating two-fisted hoagies, etc. while behind the wheel. A lot of people are just plain oblivious to the dangers of distraction behind the wheel. My point is where do you stop? The starting point should, in my opinion, be better driver ed programs.
RE: [Chevelle-List] Driving/Car Safety
In Pennsylvania you can get your driving permit at 16. You are permitted to drive only with a licensed adult drive up to 10 PM. Upon passing your driving test you may drive alone up to 11 PM until your 18th birthday. If you go through an approved driving school you may apply to get your full license 6 months before your 18th birthday. Provide you have no accidents, citations or moving violations of any kind. There was talk about raising the permit and license age to 18but I am not sure of the out come of that. Something I do like about Pa law. If your under age and caught drinking, you lose your driving privileges as part of the fine / punishment. I work about a mile from a driver's exam station and it is easy to find, but the number of brain dead morons, lazy people who don't want to take the energy to look at a map (or the road for signs for that matter),or people who can't speak english asking for it is unreal. I say "hey... if you can't find the driver's exam station you already fail map reading, trip preperation, and sign reading. You fail." IMO I would raise the driving age for lic. to 18 and keep permits or restricted lic. at 16. And make a real driving test to pass. I mean fake kids on bikes flying out from bushes and idiot driver's going through stop lights on their cell phone heheee. More than once I have wondered what it would take to install anti-lock brakesand air bags on my 69 Che
